If you’ve ever used a full-height keyboard (if you’re older, you remember), you’ve probably used sculpted keycaps without knowing it. Sculpted keycaps are a specific type of keycap designed for a more ergonomic typing experience. There are several types of sculpted keycaps you can get, let’s assess what makes sculpted keycaps special.

What Makes Sculpted Keycaps Different?

Sculpted keycaps are different because each row of keys is a different height from the other rows. This makes some of the rows easier to reach with your fingers with smaller movements, which some people find very comfortable.

The exact height of the keycap will differ based on the profile. For instance a Cherry profile keycap set will have a different height than an SDA or SOA profile set.

Are Sculpted Keycaps More Ergonomic?

Sculpted keycaps are designed to provide a more ergonomic experience for the user. However, in practice there is very little difference in the ergonomics of sculpted vs. uniform keycaps. It’s all about personal preference and needs. For instance, if you’re buying keycaps that are designed for a U.S. ANSI layout keyboard but they’re uniform height, you can mix up the keys if you use a different layout like Dvorak.
