Is the Samsung S22 Ultra Still Worth Buying in 2024?

I’m planning to upgrade my phone in 2025. However, I haven’t got the funds for it now and I don’t have any intention of financing a phone. So, we’ll see what I get when it’s time for the upgrade. Thus, I’m still using my Samsung S22 Ultra, though I’ve had to replace the phone once due to a broken screen and the exorbitant price of repair services. Let’s see if this phone has withstood the test of time.

Screen

The phone features a 6.8-inch, 120 Hz, 1440 x 3088 pixels, 19.3:9 ratio (~500 ppi density), dynamic AMOLED screen with a curved bevel on the left and right sides. For what it’s worth, the screen is still pretty modern in specifications. It’s fairly large, as is usual for phablets, and has a high refresh rate and its resolution is pretty high. It’s possible to get phones with better resolutions now, but you won’t be disappointed with the resolution and sharpness of the images on this phone.

Its refresh rate is great for gaming and the screen is nice and big. However, depending on the game’s native resolution, you might experience black bars on the sides of the game screen.

Memory

The S22 Ultra came in a few different memory sizes.

  • 128GB 8GB RAM
  • 256GB 12GB RAM
  • 512GB 12GB RAM
  • 1TB 12GB RAM

With memory sizes up to 1TB internal storage and 12GB of RAM, this phone remains a strong contender.

Camera

The back camera is a 108 MP camera with capabilities for wide, ultrawide, telescopic, and periscope photography. It can record up to 8K video (24 FPS max at this resolution) and has the ability for HDR 10+ video color. The selfie camera is a 40 MP camera and can record up to 4K (30 FPS max at this resolution).

Operating System

The phone uses the Android operating system and users can sideload other operating systems onto their phone using the bootloader. The operating system will continue to receive official updates up through Android 16 and can be updated with Lineage OS or another Android distribution if desired once official support ends.

Battery Life

Samsung’s Battery Protection setting can be used to extend the lifespan of the 5,000 mAph battery. I play games on my phone almost all day and get around 8—12 hours of battery life out of an 80% charge even when using my phone for intensive processes all day.

S Pen

One of the primary draws of the Samsung S22 Ultra and other Ultra model Samsung phones is the S Pen integration. Previously reserved for the now-discontinued Samsung Note series phones, the S Pen has been integrated into several Samsung devices, including tablets, Ultra phones, and the Z Fold phone. If stylus phones are your style, this is an excellent phone to reach that end.
