Is Pokémon Masters EX Worth Playing?

Pokémon Masters EX is the gacha game run by Nintendo, aimed at capitalizing off of the most successful video game franchise of all time, Pokémon. Is the game worth playing, though? Let’s look at the details.

Genre

Pokémon Master EX is an RPG game with gacha elements. This means that users will be exposed to a story-heavy, visual-novel style gameplay with real-time combat sequences. Unlike mainline Pokémon games, the combat isn’t turn based. Instead, the users will have a real-time Pokémon battle where they must attack and use buff skills in real time to build up their Sync gauge and unleash powerful Sync moves.

Payment Model

Pokémon Masters EX uses a free-to-play model funded by microtransactions. Microtransactions are for sums of “Gems” which can be used to pull for new characters and costumes, and buy some items within the game.

Consumer Friendliness

On the whole, Pokémon Masters EX is pretty consumer friendly. With very little engagement beyond doing my dailies, I’ve almost racked up the 40,000 odd gems you would need to guarantee a character (a little over 100 pulls in total). Paid packages in the game are generally very fair, costing around $30 for a pull and a character of your choice when they run Select Scout offers.

Events

Events in Pokémon Masters EX are relatively generous. They’ll give you a healthy amount of gems, 5* scout tickets, and other great rewards. They don’t require a huge amount of time investment either. You can really just log in, do your skips, and log back out.

Is the Story Any Good?

The story for Pokémon Masters EX falls into the same pitfall that most Pokémon game stories do. It’s very surface level and while it’s cute and charming, it doesn’t have much substance.

Are the Events Worth It?

The events in Pokémon Masters EX provide relatively good rewards and are worth doing if you have time.

Is It Worth Playing?

Honestly, I wouldn’t say Pokémon Masters EX is a “must-play” game. It’s fun but it’s primarily aimed at and designed for people who are already fans of Pokémon. Unless you’re really into Pokémon to begin with, it’s probably a game you can skip without feeling bad.
